This 3-minute mockumentary features an “enlightened stupid marketer” who masks his lack of insight, ingenuity and initiative by using marketing buzzwords and pausing mid-sentence for (apparent) thought/deliberation. My favorite line:
“I’m a voracious … book buyer. I buy all the marketing classics. I just wish that they sold the covers only. … See? That’s a marketing insight.”
If you’re thinking this parody is so spot-on that the guy who did it must be in marketing, you’re absolutely right. Kevin Nalts makes viral videos by night — he has his own channel on YouTube — but by day he’s a career marketer. (Related to nothing, check out the video he did on the Bubble Gum Tree.)
I’d like to think that most of us in corporate marketing are competent, hard-working and reasonably bright. Unfortunately, it’s the guys like the one lampooned in his video who often get remembered.

Most people are hard-working and reasonably bright, yet they still get lampooned to no end – regardless of whether you’re a marketer or a cop or a lawyer.
Messages such as this help me understand how others may perceive me. Even if it may not change what I do, it helps me communicate better with others, knowing their bias and their fears. Embrace this video – it has its funny moments.
